First Aid
FIRST AID, CPR, and WILDERNESS FIRST AID
Will you be prepared for an emergency? What about your Scouts? The Greater St. Louis Area Council would like to make sure you can answer yes to both of these questions. Training is available that will help adult leaders be prepared for anything from a minor burn to a serious medical emergency.
First Aid
This training is beneficial not only in your Scout troop, but in your day-to-day life. Whether you are on a troop hike, at a child’s sporting event, at the office, or just at home, knowing how to calmly handle everything from cuts and scrapes to poisonings can help save a life.
Contact your local fire station. Most offer first aid and CPR training. You may also email the American Red Cross at takeaclass@redcrossstl.org or call (314) 516-2740 for any upcoming training opportunities.
CPR
This training helps you recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults (persons over 8 years of age). Learn to care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

These courses are designed to meet the needs of those who go into areas that are beyond the reach of urban EMS. Certification is approximately 16 hours of training for situations when help is delayed. It is required for those units going to Philmont, Sea Base, the Summit, or Northern Tier and is recommended for back country camping, hiking, canoeing, or other high adventure. The certification is good for two years.
***You must be certified in CPR with AED before taking this course. This prerequisite must be a certification course where your skills are evaluated by an instructor of the agency running the course. The course must include compression and rescue breaths. Hands only CPR or online courses are not a valid substitute.
Certified First Aid & CPR Instructors
If you would like to conduct a CPR certification class through the Boy Scouts of America, you will need to be a certified instructor. Certification is achieved through an accredited organization that is offering instruction.
If you plan to conduct CPR certification or Red Card training you will need CPR mannequins. The Greater St. Louis Area Council has 10 CPR mannequins available for your use. To use the dummies, there is a charge of $5 per dummy plus the cost of any other materials you require such as first aid kits, face shields, books, etc. We also require a major credit card to reserve the dummies.
The council requires that you reserve the mannequins and materials at least one week ahead of time. Please call the Training department at (314) 256-3126 to reserve a date.
